Competitor Analysis Playbook: Reverse-Engineer Any Brand's Meta Ad Strategy
An eight-step, afternoon-long playbook to inventory, cluster and decode any competitor's entire Meta ad strategy — no tools required.
Reverse-engineering a competitor's Meta ad strategy is a checklist, not a magic trick. Here is the eight-step playbook we use when onboarding a brand into AdScrape.
1. Map the funnel
Write down what you think the brand sells, at what price, to whom.
2. Inventory every active ad
Pull every ad. Spreadsheet columns: ad ID, platforms, start date, media type, headline, CTA, landing URL.
3. Cluster by angle
Tag each ad with: pain, aspiration, price, social proof, FOMO, education, brand. The biggest bucket is the brand's dominant message.
4. Identify the hero creative
The ad with the most variations + longest run time is the hero.
5. Read the landing pages
Note: destination, hero block, social proof position, scarcity cues, primary CTA.
6. Track cadence
Re-pull weekly. New ads = testing. Disappeared = killed. Persistent = winners.
7. Estimate spend tier
Use political ad bands or SimilarWeb proxies. "Under $10k/mo," "$10–100k," "$100k+" is enough.
8. Write the one-page brief
Who they sell to, angles, hero creative, landing structure, cadence, spend tier.
